What’s Happening by Rita Sweeney
September 11-The horrendous crashing of hijacked planes into buildings in D.C. and
Manhattan and the 4th one crashed in Pa. was incredibly evil in it’s scope. Our president
states that he’ll find those responsible and bring them to justice. Now it’s being reported
that Osama bin Laden is responsible. Our prayers and thoughts go out to those thousands
who lost relatives and friends in this cowardly attack.
September 8-9- Hazleton had its Annual Funfest this weekend. There were lots of free
activities at the Presbyterian Church both Saturday and Sunday. They were giving out
balloons to all the children. They had face and hand painting by our own Mary Theresa.
Frannie manned the table for making snow globes. The parade on Sunday was larger than
last year. There were fireworks that were spectacular! The children enjoyed the rides
and so did the adults for that matter. The church had a flea market both days and there
was the craft fair which was extremely popular.
September 27- The trip to the Bloomsberg Fair was great according to the members who
attended. There were approximately 20 people who went. Camie tried a chocolate
covered banana. Judy did a lot of walking. Frannie played bingo and won a couple of
games. The Nanticoke Drop-In also went along. Some members went to the “all you can
eat” church tent which was only $7.00 and a great deal. The weather held out as it only
drizzled a little bit.

The Scripture Corner
The tragedies on September 11 reminds me that God judges evil. These terrorists are in
danger of the judgment. Now, God is not the author of evil but He does allow it because
He gave us a free will. As hard as it is to believe it, He won’t override our choices
whether they’re good or evil, but He does promise to bring good out of it. His purposes
for allowing evil are beyond our understanding. I don’t pretend to know the sovereign
mind of God. When we humble ourselves before Him He can use us to heal others and
bring good out of evil. The Lord says in Isaiah 34:8 revenge is His. 2 Thessalonians 2:7
says there is a mystery of evil. The Greek word anomia is translated iniquity or
wickedness here and indicates lawlessness or unrighteousness. He doesn’t overrule our
ungodly decisions but He will judge sin, don’t you worry about that. There’s a judgement
day coming for us all. Hebrews 9:27 says its appointed unto man once to die and then the
judgement. If you don’t have Jesus paying the penalty of your sin you have no
righteousness of your own to pay for it. Only Christ’s perfect blood can be the substitute
for your sin. James 4:14 states life is a mist,a vapor that appears for a while and then
vanishes. These horrendous acts of terrorism September 11 shows the brevity of life. You
have to make provision for your eternity. Either it will be with God in heaven or
without Him in hell. God’s will is that all come to repentance,2 Peter 3:9. God is
deliberately holding back the return of Christ to give you time to accept Christ’s
atonement for your sin. God remains faithful in spite of our unfaithfulness. He could
have destroyed Adam and Eve or Noah and his family, but He was patient with them.
Praise you Lord for your patience and faithfulness! Take Him up on His offer of
forgiveness now while there’s still time. Ask Jesus Christ to be your Savior and Lord.
